While the conflict in Ukraine escalates dangerously and Israel continues to bomb Gaza and prepare - with the help of the United States - a major war in the Middle East with an eye on Lebanon, Iran, Yemen or Syria, silence any story that falls outside the narrative official is the parallel strategy.

In the throes of this calamitous world order propped up by wars and censorship, supporting independent journalism has become more urgent than ever. At least if we are not willing to survive with the only voice of Big Brother howling in the desert. Either we stand up to this horrible drift or the silence will end up devouring us.

The genocide that we witnessed live in Gaza is the infamous epilogue of the decline of Western dominance over the world, its most illustrative image. It is the absolute collapse of all the values that the West once proclaimed.

No one who supports what is happening by action or omission, no one who, having been able to do something to prevent it, has not done so, will be able to talk about human rights again after this without their face falling with shame.

As a European, in recent months I have repeatedly felt indignation and shame at the behavior of Europe and its leaders. The servile attitude towards the US designs in Ukraine - against its own interests -, the cancellation of Russian culture, the position towards China, the calls to restrict asylum to refugees, the rise of the extreme right, the imposition of the single discourse and the censorship of any different opinion were devastating symptoms.

But the position of the European Union (EU) in the face of the enormous tragedy that it is suffering and will suffer even more, if no one remedies it, the Palestinian people has exceeded all limits of what is imaginable.

Few companies in the world have been as attacked from a state as the Chinese technology company Huawei has been by the United States government. Blacklisted, prevented from doing business in the US and also from importing semiconductor material with minimal US technology or components anywhere in the world. Vetoed to install their 5G networks in many countries due to pressure from Washington, unable to use Google's Android operating system on their mobile phones.

All this in the name of "national security", the new multi-purpose expression coined by Washington to twist when it suits competition on equal terms and the basic rules of the "free market" on which its entire economic system is supposedly based.

A new multipolar Middle East

The agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia, sponsored by China - which could also soon end the war in Yemen - is an event of special historical relevance and a clear example of how conflicts can be resolved in a multipolar world not constrained to the designs of a single hegemonic power. A model that they were certainly not used to in the region. China has emerged, to everyone's surprise, as the mediator that the Middle East needed. Something that for the United States, clearly aligned with one of the sides, has become totally impossible. Chinese mediation shows the constructive role that powers can play in the Middle East when they are not mired in regional rivalries.

The dangerous unipolar drift

We are witnessing a terrifying world drift. The non-acceptance by the United States of its decline as a global hegemonic power is stressing the planet to unimaginable extremes. The so-called “Thucydides trap”, which describes the tendency for a hegemonic power to go to war when threatened by an emerging one, is fully unfolding before our eyes with all its devastating consequences. The hegemon, who considers himself threatened, displays his most sinister face both internally and externally: censorship, suffocating manipulation of media messages, single discourse, maximum use of fear as a political weapon.
