The Marburg virus outbreak in Rwanda has been linked to experiments for a US military vaccine.

The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) allegedly received $35,75 million in covert funding from the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) between 2021 and 2023 to develop a vaccine against the Marburg virus, according to the German news portal New-facts.
IAVI reportedly conducted vaccine research at the Kigali Family Health Research Centre (KFHCRC) in Rwanda, where numerous virus samples were cultured. A serious security incident occurred in September 2024: a leak of virus samples occurred in the KFHRC laboratory.
